Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas - Orlando Cruz (20-3-1, 10 KOs) took the first round by countering Salido’s attack. Orlando Salido (40-12-2, 28 KOs) was warned for low blows in the second round with the Puerto Rican finding success landing his punches. The Mexican Salido began to connect meaningful shots in the third trapping Cruz to the ropes. In the fourth round both fighters became active landing their punches with Salido having the advantage but was cut from a punch.
Cruz timed Salido in the fifth utilizing his jab and countering Salido’s attacks. Salido went back to the body in round six backing up the former 2000 Olympian. A left uppercut by Salido knocked out Cruz in round seven. Once again Salido became the WBO featherweight champion by beating a Puerto Rican fighter. Cruz, who attempted to become the first openly gay fighter to win a championship, will now go back to the drawing board.
