First Bank Center, Denver, Colorado - Right from the gate the fight was fought phone booth style. Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KOs) came forward with Mike Alvarado (32-2, 23 KOs) attempting to fight from a distance. The early rounds were fought on even terms. Alvarado landed jabs, right crosses and Provodnikov applied the pressure on the inside. The fight began to favor Provodnikov in the middle rounds when he began to cut off the ring working the body and connecting on right hand shots.
Provodnikov knocked down Alvarado twice with an acclimation of punches for a huge round eight. A body attack by Provodnikov almost had Alvarado out on his feet in round ten. Alvarado did not come out for round eleven and Provodnikov became the new WBO junior welterweight champion. Alvarado’s corner advised him not to continue the bout for further punishment. The Kazakhstan native Provodnikov now has a lot of options on future opponents. Tim Bradley will probably be number one on his list.
