Orlando, Florida - Miguel Cotto entered the ring to a Las Vegas-like atmosphere last night in Orlando. The very heavy Latin crown was cheering and singing for their hero. What some may have seen as a "goodbye and thanks" to his loyal fans turned out to be anything but. From the opening bell, Cotto showed a hard game that Delvin Rodriguez had no respect whatsoever. Cotto was punishing him with left jabs to the body in what looked like to the casual boxing fan, his strong hand. Cotto dominated throughout the short fight, with the lanky Rodriguez able to do nothing.
In the third round, Cotto finally started to come upstairs and finished off what everyone could tell what was going to happen in the first minute. A brutal knockout that sent Rodriguez reeling and forcing the referee to stop the action. Beaming with pride and his fans cheering wildly, Cotto cemented and stamped a dominant win in front of the world on HBO and proved hes back and may be better than ever. Miguel Cotto was coming off two straight losses and to many looked like he was done after taking so much punishment throughout his career.
In a picture perfect world, Cotto had to come up with a "boxing business plan".Not only did he do that, he did it to perfection. First, Cotto (or a brilliant advisor) brought Freddie Roach into the picture. At this point in Miguel Cotto's career, he is what he is, theres nothing that's really going to change a fighter. Especially Roach who doesn't pay too much mind to defense ways. Roach is a big name in boxing and hiring him would without a doubt garner interest. Immediately after hiring Roach, Cotto's name came up everywhere just for the simple fact of hiring Roach. That's a win in itself. Publicity.
Next he teams up with Top Rank to find a Journeyman (a very good journeyman but a journeyman nonetheless) who is taller and lankier and Cotto could easily go to the body and end the fight without taking bodyshots himself (body shots can take years off a fighters career). Teaming up with Top Rank on a fight by fight basis, Cotto, would be able to put himself in the best position of his career with Alvarez and Sergio Martinez looking with big paydays. So "the plan" worked to perfection, Cotto got major Pub, almost sold an Orlando Arena out with Latin fans, had a vicious KO, and didnt get a scratch on him so no future wear on his boxing aged body. Make no mistake, Cotto looked sharp and he did beat a man in a ring, but this all just seemed like a brilliant boxing "set-up" that worked to perfection. One cant help but realize Top Rank helped him with this "plan" and he will not ditch them (her has a VERY close relation ship with Top Rank President Todd Duboef, but you never know).
In my opinion, look for Cotto to sign another one fight deal with Top Rank. (Bob Arum told me its already in the works) and cash out on the biggest payday of his career on his own Pay Per View vs Canelo Alvarez or Sergio Martinez. All this being said, Miguel Cotto is definitely back as a force in boxing and I'll take last nights Miguel Cotto over the last Canelo Alvarez and Sergio Martinez we have seen. Everyone wins on this whole "plan". Top rank, Cotto, Roach, and the fans. Whoever made this "plan" should get a major raise and promotion.
