Fireworks began early on in the first round as both fighters let their hands go. Dat Nguyen (17-3, 6 KOs) was credited with a knockdown when Jayson Velez (21-0, 15 KOs) got clobbered and his glove touched the canvas. Velez got his legs back under him in the third and connected the more meaningful punches.
The Puerto Rican Velez successfully fought behind his jab in round four. Both fighters had their moments in round five with Velez getting the better of the exchanges. Velez won rounds six and seven by out-boxing Nguyen, landing uppercuts and staying one step ahead of the action. The Vietnamese warrior Nguyen took a great amount of punishment throughout the first eight rounds.
A slugfest broke out at the end of the ninth and continued in round ten until the end of the bell. The out-matched Nguyen gave it a gamed effort. Velez’s all around boxing skills have improved since training with Abel Sanchez. All three judges’ had it for Velez 98-91 and 96-93 twice.
Jorge Melendez (27-3-1, 26 KOs) power became apparent in the opening stanza when he floored Jamaal Davis (14-11-1, 6 KOs) twice. Davis was on spaghetti legs in the second round due to bombs thrown from Melendez and the referee stopped it a short time later. The bout was fought at the junior middleweight limit.
2012 Puerto Rican Olympian lightweight Felix Verdejo (8-0, 6 KOs) dazzled the crowd with a superior performance. The outclassed Gary Eyer (11-4-1, 7 KOs) did not have a chance from the opening bell. Verdejo overwhelmed Eyer with speed, power and technical ability. In the second round the referee had finally seen enough and put a halt to the bout to save the nose bloodied Eyer.
Middleweight rookie Moises Carasquillo (4-0, 3 KOs) walked right through Steven Chadwick (2-5, 1 KO). Carasquillo solid right hand shots bloodied the face of Chadwick from the second round until the final bell and swept the scorecards 40-36.
Junior featherweights Ricky Tomlinson (1-0-1, 1 KO) and Lamar Charlton (1-4-2, 1 KO) battled to a fourth round draw. Both fighters had their moments but neither fighter did enough to pull away. The scores were 39-37 for Tomlinson, 39-37 for Charlton and 38-38 even.
